The new Karate Kid is already released and it is a surprise blockbuster. In this movie, Jacky Chan plays the role of Master or Teacher, while Jaden Smith (yes, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith’s son) relives the role of Ralph Macchio. This new movie remains very faithful to the old one, but of course there are many twists incorporated to make it current. What’s nice is that the very simple storyline is preserved, and the very simple characters are not enhanced to match today’s many complicated villains. Jacky Chan surely had to gain some weight to look much older, and he had to act and move slow as well. We all know how Jacky can still put on the moves and in this movie, he needed to be much slower and older than his usual self, after all, the original actor who played the part is actually a grandfather! It is so refreshing to hear everyone in the theater cheer and clap for Drey, the character portrayed by Jaden, and it is like watching the movie with friends in your living room.
